Fundamentals

The Fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu are the building blocks of every technique you’ll encounter on the mats.  Core movements and theories on “why” we try to achieve or avoid certain positions, followed by a “how” like a specific technique that will highlight that theory.

An hour-class structure will look like this example:

  •  Begin Class
  • 15 Minutes of warm ups/solo drills/partner drills
  • 30 minutes of teaching and drilling the theory of the week
  • 15 minutes of live rolls or specific training
  • 30 minutes or more of Open Mat after every class

An hour-class structure will look like this example:

  •  Begin Class
  • 15 Minutes of warm ups/solo drills/partner drills
  • 30 minutes of teaching and drilling a specific area like ‘breaking and passing single leg x’
  • 15 minutes of live rolls or specific training the position we were in during the lesson
  • 30 minutes or more of Open Mat after every class

No-Gi

No-Gi is the application of Jiu Jitsu techniques without the use of the traditional gi or ‘kimono’.  Other art forms that intersect here include Wrestling and Sambo and have a heavy influence on modern No-Gi.

A hour-class structure will look like this example:

  •  Begin Class
  • 15 Minutes of warm ups/solo drills/partner drills
  • 30 minutes of teaching and drilling
  • 15 minutes of live rolls or specific training
  • 30 minutes or more of Open Mat after every class

Open Mat

Drill to win! Open mat is time set aside for the student and teachers alike to drill or practice the techniwues they would like to focus on, either by drilling or rolling with teammates.  Open mat is set after every class, allowing students to meet their own chosen quota for the day.

I will teach you everything, not just my style. Do not mistake me, I love my style! But it doesn’t mean you have to use it. I want you to be able to choose your own style, so I will teach you all that I know!” – Professor Andre Galvao.
